Threat to system
Article Abstract:
There is pressure on the Bank of England to postpone the launch of an electronic settlement system for government securities (gilts). Market makers and brokers involved with gilts are concerned that too many problems have arisen to carry out the introduction as scheduled in Aug 1997. The Bank aims to transfer all settlements to the new system, rather than in phases as occurred with Crest, the new system for equities. Implementation will need three days when financial markets have shut down, and August 1997 is the last time this occurs until Christmas 1997.
