Tightening the screw on tax planning

Article Abstract:

The treasury said that its intention was to improve clarity and transparency, but aspects of the implementation of the rules will certainly lead to widespread confusion. The hapless European savings tax directive, which has been further delayed until July 2005, is another example of rules designed to ensure domestic taxpayers are not using tax planning devices in other European Union member states or their related territories (Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Andorra, Monaco and a whole clutch of countries in the Caribbean).

The ghost of Christmas past

Article Abstract:

The creditors of Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) are claiming up to 1 billion-sterling pounds from the Bank of England, after its liquidation. The case that would start on 12 January 2004 is creating a lot of pressure on the Bank of England, since it is accused of avoiding the fraud at BCCI, which crashed with 7 billion of undeclared debts.
