Toward designer milk
Article Abstract:
A paper by Jost and colleagues describes an unusual route to low-lactose milk production. This will obviously benefit individuals who are lactose intolerant. The group has generated transgenic mice that selectively produce a biologically active lactase in their milk. This lactase-phlorizin hydrolase is normally present in the small intestine as a 130 kDa mature enzyme.

Genetically enhanced cows resist intramammary Staphylococcus aureus infection
Article Abstract:
Intramammary infusions Staphylococcus aureus were administered to three transgenic and ten nontransgenic cows. The results indicate genetic engineering can provide a viable tool for enhancing resistance to disease and improve the well-being of livestock.

Tackling mastitis in diary cows
Article Abstract:
Transgenic cows expressing an antibacterial endopeptidase in their mammary glands show enhanced resistance to mastitis. Mastitis is the costliest disease in the diary industry, generating losses of over $2 billion in the United States.
