UK/US: HORIZON'S EXPANSION

Annual turnover of US group Horizon Organic Dairy has increased by 71.7% to US$ 84.7mn (GB[pound] 54.6mn) in 1999. Rachel's Organic Dairy, the UK branch, had sales of US$ 1.4mn (GB[pound] 900,000) in the fourth quarter 1999. Horizon plans to expand to other geographical areas and introduce new products such organic single-serve juices. This should push sales up by 45% to GB[pound] 35mn this year. Horizon is also going to increase some of its US retail prices by around 3% in March 2000. In the UK, Rachel's new business manager Jane Lindley will make contacts with farmers in the south-west of England and near its plant in Aberystwyth to raise supply of milk for new yoghurt production.

IBM is offering new point-of-sale software that connects stores, web sites and multimedia applications. It will help customers to get information about products as well as loyalty points, while retailers will be able to tailor their in-store products more accurately. One of the first stores using this system is Karstadt in Germany. It is likely that this technology will be widely used within five years.
