UK equities: value pays
Article Abstract:
Value-based investment is used by some funds like P and D Fund management and M and G. It involves selecting shares with low price-earnings ratios or high dividend yields. Capel-Cure's Mike Lenhoff argues that value investment performs better than investing in growth stocks over the long term. His study focuses on larger companies so avoid distortions that could come from the outperformance of some smaller stocks. Value stocks can, however, become unfashionable and it is unclear how long such trends last.

To avoid hot water, keep out of the pool: Stockbrokers and their regulators continually reassure us that assets held in nominee accounts are safe and secure. But two recent cases demonstrate that it's true only if those accounts are designated
Article Abstract:
Small investors may not see much relevance in the recent collapse of International Futures Corporation (IFC), a small investment firm, but it emphasizes the importance of ensuring funds are in a designated account. Funds that are in a pooled-client account could lose money due to the actions of a fellow investor. At IFC an overseas customer defaulted on a deal and the broker was forced to pay the debt from funds in the pooled-client account, leaving a shortfall and an average loss to each client.

Guaranteed, but not absolutely safe
Article Abstract:
UK investors can choose from a number of guaranteed products such as bonds and unit trusts. A guarantee can boost sales, but guaranteed products may not always be safe. Returns may be limited, or a minimum return may be guaranteed with security of capital. Returns can be higher if they are solely linked to the market, and some products offer this while guaranteeing to preserve capital. Income may also be guaranteed, with the capital dependent on the market.
