UK stock market: dizzy heights

Article Abstract:

UK share prices rose in Sep 1996, but the rise halted after concern over possible rises in interest rates in the UK and the US. Eddie George, governor of the Bank of England,is seeking a rate rise, and strong retail sales mean there is pressure on the government to raise rates. Eight regional Federal Reserve banks in the US from a total of 12 are in favor of a rate rise, but since their decision, data has been released showing a drop in inflation. US rates could affect UK shares, but the reaction of the capital market will affect this.

Without cheaper money earnings won't grow

Article Abstract:

Financial markets are waiting for reductions in interest rates by the German and US authorities. Corporate profits are tending to drop in the US, and estimates for profit growth in Europe have been revised downwards. Interest rate cuts are needed to prevent a further weakening of earnings momentum. The Asian market is likely to be affected by events in Japan where a small number of large companies play a major role in corporate profits. A sign of recovery in the banking industry would help the economy as a whole.
