Technology stocks have been volatile, and this has led to a drop of 20 per cent for Nasdaq and 25% for the techMARK 100 index. Sharper falls ahve occurred for a number of individual stocks. Technology funds attracted investors prior to the end of the tax year. Funds with broad remits have tended to perform well and may include a number of old economy stocks. Pure internet stocks may become less popular than companies with a mix of activities, according to Best Investment.

Stock warrants suffered sharp losses in summer 1998, but have since recovered. Some real estate sectors are threatened by oversupply, but the industry should be aided by a drop in investment yields and interest rates. Trusts specialising in mainland Europe have seen a strong performance for their stocks. There has been a rebound for Latin American and Far Eastern markets since a low point in Sep 1998, and this has helped emerging market specialists and funds specialising in those regions.
