Veterinary medicines abuse puts Austria under fire

Article Abstract:

The European Union carried out an inspection of Austria's animal industry and discovered widespread abuse of veterinary medicines in food-producing animals including use large amounts of antibiotics, prohibited drugs and drugs of unknown origin. The European Union criticized Austria for its lack of veterinary medicines legislation and its lack of response to the "pig-fattening scandal," a widely-publicised animal health scandal. Austria has outlined plans for new legislation and a national animal health service, but has likely suffered political damage despite these efforts.

"Keep Antibiotics Working" and the anthrax AB bandwagon

Article Abstract:

The newly formed group Keep Antibiotics Working is asking the livestock industry to stop overusing antibiotics and is also trying to persuade Bayer to comply with the Food and Drug Administration's ban on Baytril, an antibiotic used in poultry. According to Keep Antibiotics Working, use of antibiotics in healthy animals contributes to the development of antibiotic resistant bacteria and compromises the effectiveness of antibiotics used in humans.

EU targets non-prescription veterinary medicines

Article Abstract:

A proposal has been made to make all livestock veterinary treatments used in the European Union as prescription-only treatments. However, the Fedesa, an industry association, does not agree this will solve any problems and may, in fact, create more. The restriction of medicine to facilities could close agricultural merchants and result in financial difficulties for them.
