WPP to whip Y&R into shape

WPP Group's $4.7-billion purchase of Young and Rubicam Inc (Y and R) will result in the top two public relations firms, Hill and Knowlton (H and K) and Burson-Marsteller (B-M), being under the same house. The takeover by WPP, known for closely supervising any company that it acquires, will also lead to the departure of Y and R CEO Tom Bell at the conclusion of the transition period. H and K and B-M reported 1999 revenues of $243 million and $274 million, respectively.
