Warrants: geared to uncertainty

Article Abstract:

Stock warrants give investors exposure to stock markets for a smaller capital outlay than if shares were purchased. It is not easy to predict which market will perform well, so warrants allow investors to diversify. Investment trust warrants are available for UK investors. A number of trusts cover emerging markets, mainland Europe and Japan, though fewer trusts specialize in the UK or the US. Long-dated warrants mean less pressure for investors to sell early.

Putting the perspective into speculation: true, warrants-long-dated options to buy shares-can be risky

Article Abstract:

Investments such as warrants are speculative as they depend on share price movements over a stated period of time. However with carefull planning the inevitable losses can be covered by the gains. Warrants should be invested in where the last exercise date is well into the future allowing enough time for share price performance. Some capital may still be retrievable if exercise would not be profitable, by selling in the market.

Continental drift: economic growth has further to run in Europe than in the UK or US this economic cycle around. So warrants in specialist European investment trusts offer the best opportunities

Article Abstract:

The majority of warrants are investment trust issues, which have underperformed, meaning less benefit for investors. However the improvement in BTR's ordinary shares of 14% has helped lift the prices of warrants. Turkey Trust warrants have reflected the doubling of the Instanbul market in 1995. The UK market will move higher in 1995 with benefits for the warrants of trusts specialising in UK stocks.
