Do EE Careers Suffer from Poor Management?
Article Abstract:
Four companies employing electrical engineers were examined by a psychologist and it was found that engineering management may be the biggest danger to productivity. Engineers are made to feel inferior to managers by being left out of organizational policy, excluded from meetings, and seldom sent to meet customers or attend conferences. The computer company has a lack of communication between managers and engineers. Competition is fierce at the semiconductor manufacturer and there is little strategy for long- term management. The military contractor has stagnated in a non- competitive market and is very resistent to any change. Management at the consumer-product manufacturer is geared toward basic research, with little regard for the final product. The problems at these companies are due mainly to faults of upper level managers. The engineers at these companies are generally unhappy with their jobs because the managers pay little attention to the welfare of their workers.

What do industry-specialist auditors know?
Article Abstract:
The link between knowledge and experience was examined in industry-specialized auditors. The study focused on auditors whose knowledge of financial statement errors and nonerrors was committed to memory, since memory and the knowledge it contains are vital to the study of judgment and decision behavior. It tested the hypotheses that industry-specialist auditors have greater knowledge of the factors affecting financial statement errors and nonerrors in their industry of specialization and that they have more accurate knowledge of the frequency of such errors compared to other industries. Two experiments were conducted, with one using the judgment-change knowledge measurement method while the other using the cued recall method, which generated conflicting results. Taken together, these findings suggest that nonerror knowledge is enhanced by the specialized training and direct experiences of industry specialists.

Valid role or salad roll...
Article Abstract:
There is considerable discussion going on regarding the usefulness of National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) for museum staff. Museums have relied more and more on raising funds themselves through admission charges, shops, coffee bars and similar enterprises because of inadequate public funding. . Qualifications for museum curators are available at universities and it is thought that the historical and cultural skills required by curators are not applicable to NVQs. It is thought that academic circles will convert their courses to postgraduate work and that museums will recruit future curators from university graduates.
