The main UK banks and a number of stockbrokers have ceased to emphasise relationships with their clients, and this has created a gap in the private banking market. Clients should assess private banks and select the bank that they feel comfortable with. Some private banks prefer clients to be introduced to them, though other banks regard this approach as old fashioned. The cost of services provided by these banks has become more important as clients have become less loyal to a particular bank.

United Kingdom private banks are increasingly seeking to attract a new type of client who may have few assets, but benefits from a large income. Private banks may reconsider their minimum portfolio levels, especially if new clients are introduced by accountants or other advisers whom the bank knows. Banks set minimum portfolio levels because charges would otherwise take too high a proportion of investments, and risk spreads are more difficult to achieve with smaller sums.
