Where recovery's concerned, next year could be a long time coming
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom economy may grow little in 1999, but this could change in 2000. There is also a possibility that recovery could come earlier than expected, which would benefit cyclical stocks, and many fund managers are moving into cyclicals. South African, Canadian and Australian stocks are showing little signs of a strong recovery. Meanwhile, Wall Street faces problems while long bond yields rise. The impact of Japanese economic policy cannot easily be assessed, though Japan's economy could recover if expansionary policies continue.

Forewarned is forearmed
Article Abstract:
Investor protection in the United Kingdom does not mean that investors can relax since there are a number of pitfalls to trap the unwary. The Personal Investment Authority's Consumer Panel is concerned about various problems. These include lack of regulation for many long term care insurance products. Broker funds are also criticised for their charges and possible conflicts of interest. Penny shares are seen as highly speculative. There is also concern about disclosure and about the way that some products are advertised.
