Where to Put a $50,000 Golden Egg
Article Abstract:
Assuming a $50,000 windfall fell your way, few people would actually know how to invest it to get the maximum growth in accordance with their future financial goals. Six advisers analyze investment scenarios for people in three stages of their lives - single and under thirty, married with two children and a widow who is sixty-five. The young single investor can afford to take more risk with the money and might put three-fourths of the money into growth-stock funds, while using the rest for an emergency account and an IRA. The working married couple with two children should invest much of the money in fixed-income securities which could help cover impending college expenses or give cash gifts to the children which can be invested at their lower tax rate. The older widow who is living on a small fixed income would need to plan for income to cover inflationary expenses; therefore, half of the money should go into safe money funds, T-Bills or CDs, while the rest of the money goes to growth-and-income-producing investments and high yield stocks and bonds.

Hidden Values in High Tech Rejects
Article Abstract:
Stock brokers and analysts had no reservations about recommending the purchase of high tech stocks in the first month of 1983, when the prices for them were at their highest. But now that many of these stocks have seen their prices plummet, these same analysts are staying far away from high tech stocks. There are some analysts, however, who feel that some of these high tech stocks still have a lot of life left in them, and that this may be exactly the right time to buy these stocks. Many of the high-tech industries have experienced a shakeout, and the survivors may be at an appealingly low price. Aside from high tech stocks, it may also be a good time to purchase some of the medical technology stocks. Some of the companies listed which would make for a good purchase now include: IBM Apple Computer, Digital Equipment, Daisy Systems, Mentor Graphics, Genentech, Hybritech, Genetic Systems, and Shared Medical Systems.

What to Do with a Hot Tip
Article Abstract:
In a trendless stock market such as the one we are seeing in mid 1984, investors are especially prone to pay attention to tips they hear about the market. But tips are not always correct, and a careful investor would be wise to think twice about investment decisions based on a tip. Another thing to consider is the legalities of the tip-trading on non-public information about a company. The sources, motives and record should be considered when evaluating a hot tip and as much information as possible should be obtained about the company. A broker should, if possible, be consulted about any information concerning the tip which could be checked out. Using public information (such as annual reports) the tip can be checked out. Despite all precautions, acting on a hot tip could either lead to disaster or be a real learning experience.
