Why do software projects fail?

Article Abstract:

The failure of software projects can often be attributed to the misunderstanding of system requirements, the user's lack of understanding of the technology involved, poor project management, a lack of technical control and the initial setting of unachievable targets. Project management must involve detailed planning which is not being constantly changed but which is not permitted to become outdated. Failure should not be considered inevitable. The frequent causes of software project failure are discussed.

Experience of software measurement programmes and application of the ami method within GEC

Article Abstract:

Software process efficiency can be enhanced by the systematic use of metrics and measurement in software projects. Visibility and control can also be improved, together with the quality of delivered products. Process enhancement and measurement programmes now play a key role in software quality management systems. GEC has widely used the 'ami' measurement programme, including in the development of an ESPRIT project. The ami method and its usage by GEC are described.

Software metrication - an aid to software project management

Article Abstract:

Software development management projects can be greatly assisted by software measurement which involves comparatively small investment. Software development can prove to be the most problematic to manage and the most expensive part of any project, but this can be reduced by the application of performance measurement. Techniques for performance measurement are described.
