Carnival time?

Article Abstract:

Holders of British individual savings accounts could find emerging markets attractive, though they can be volatile. The devaluation of Mexico's peso, and later of the baht in Thailand, were followed by stock price falls, but confidence appears to be returning to emerging markets. Political risk has been reduced in a number of countries as a result of successful elections. Asia and Latin America appear attractive, though opportunities may also arise in central and eastern Europe.

Why emerging markets are still risky

Article Abstract:

There have been stock price rises in emerging markets since early Oct 1998, and some analysts see further rises as possible. Many stock prices are cheap, though this could be linked to low growth rates in the economy, as is the case in much of Latin America. The earnings outlook is good when economies begin to recover, but emerging market stocks may be seen as too risky. Investors can diversify, since problems in one emerging market do not necessarily affect other emerging markets, but a drop in US stock prices could affect emerging markets as a whole.

Building a launch pad

Article Abstract:

Nasdaq is setting up an exchange to cover all of Europe by 4th qtr 2000. The new exchange will use London, England, as a base, and will provide competition in Europe, though it aims to complement existing markets rather than provide a rival. US investors tend to be more prepared to take risks and have greater knowledge of high-tech industries. This is becoming more true for European investors. Commission should drop for investors using brokers from the United Kingdom trading through intermediaries in the US.
