Will Baxter, professor emeritus at the London School of Economics: from a high stool to a chair at the LSE
Article Abstract:
Will Baxter is considered by many as the most prominent accounting academic of the century. He is the first ever full-time professor of accounting at the London School of Economics (LSE) and recognized as the person responsible for introducing accountancy as an academic discipline. He first taught in the 1930s in Edinburgh and Cape Town before being offered the first full-time chair in accounting at LSE in 1947. He was encouraged by such influences as Prof. William Annan, who suggested he submit his name for the accounting chair at Edinburgh, and Arnold Plant, who persuaded Baxter to apply when the chair at LSE was announced. Famous accounting personalities such as Ray Hinton, Ian Hay Davison and John Flower were all former Baxter students.

Risk-averse lenders in a high-risk area
Article Abstract:
Small business in the UK often must turn to banks for finance for they often need small amounts of capital. Venture capitalists typically are not interested in lending firms small amounts, and many firms are reluctant to issue equity and lose control over their firm. Three million small businesses in the UK currently are borrowing between 30 and 40 billion pounds sterling from banks. Some UK banks, including Midlands and National Westminster, are offering small businesses more services and innovative financial products. Accountants are often called on by small businesses to help in the preparation of a financial plan to submit to the bank in order to present a case for financing.
