Will split trusts meet a sticky end
Article Abstract:
Some 25% of UK split capital trusts are scheduled to be restructured or wound up by year-end 1998, and many trusts will make small payouts if progress is not made. The condition of the market in the three months before the trusts are wound up will affect payouts, unless investors can transfer into other trusts some time before the trust is due to be wound up. There is disagreement as to whether there will be strong growth or deflation prior to 1998, and growth should boost returns for these trusts.

Never forget the discount: for most investors discount is a dirty word. But what widens can also narrow and when discounts narrow, performance is enhanced
Article Abstract:
Discounts should be viewed as an important opportunity by investors when purchasing investment trusts. Investment trusts have performed well in recent years when the discount closes, but they can underperform their benchmark when the discount widens. The discount can soften the effects of asset falls, although it can also exaggerate them.
