Who gets hired: interviewing skills are a prehire variable
Article Abstract:
A series of student interviews were conducted on three Georgia campuses to evaluate the advantages of students' possession of interviewing skills. Data collected from 361 recruiter-student pairs who evaluated 210 students revealed the presence of several factors which influence a recruiter's decision such as the applicant's qualifications and the recruiter's mood. Background and interviewing skills comprised 27.2% of the variance in the likelihood of a student receiving an offer. These two qualifications were also strongly linked to the likelihood that a student would be invited for an on-site interview.

The 1999 Business Attire Survey conducted by UCLA career center gathered information from 90 company recruiters and their replies suggest that students should dress conservatively in a business suit. The colour does not need to be blue or black but these are the preferred colours. Women's skirt length is unimportant to 75% of employers but few would accept very short ones. Half of the recruiters said trousers for women were acceptable. Accessories need to be classic rather than fashionable and in used in moderation. Perfume or aftershave should not be strongly smelling.

On the leading edge of video interviewing
Article Abstract:
Videoconferencing technology is being used in the job-interviewing system in the Florida International University Career Planning and Placement office in Miami, Florida. Videoconferencing is a new technique being applied by different employers for inter-company communication, engineering design and development, project management and executive meetings. This technique allows people to talk among themselves by watching each other through video displays. Many colleges and universities are also applying this technique for long-distance learning.
