A brief review of the relationships between monolayer viscosity, phase behavior, surface pressure, and temperature using a simple monolayer viscometer
Article Abstract:
A study demonstrates that the two-dimensional surface shear viscosity, [eta], of fatty acid monolayers of different chain lengths, measured using a simple magnetic needle viscometer, strongly correlates with the molecular organization in condensed phases and the absolute temperature. It is found that [eta] could increase by orders of magnitude at phase boundaries associated with tilted to untilted molecular order, providing the underlying order is semicrystalline.

Mixed Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films of a proton sponge and a fatty acid: Influence of the subphase nature on the interactions between the two components
Article Abstract:
The efficiency of a complex formation between a proton sponge, namely, bis(octadecylamino)phosphonium bromide, and a fatty acid onto different subphases are investigated. The study found that the complex is immiscible with the proton sponge, yielding films made of different domains, but the complex is miscible with the fatty acid when the subphase used is an alkaline solution.
