Alignment of rod-shaped gold particles by electric fields
Article Abstract:
The various aspect ratios of the electro-optical response of colloidal dispersions of rod-shaped gold particles were studied by monitoring the absorbance spectra in the visible wavelength regime. The degree of orientational order of the rods and the direction of the polarization of the incident light with respect to the applied electric field was strongly dependent on the absorbance spectra. The results showed that anisotropy in electric polarizability depended on the square root of the particle length.

High-temperature stability of passivated silver nanocrystal superlattices
Article Abstract:
Ordered arrays of approximately 4.5 nm diameter silver nanocrystals passivated with dodecanethiol revealed substantial thermal stability at temperatures up to 975 K. Defects in the ordered-assembly were the first regions to exhibit signs of melting while much of the structure remained intact. The mechanism for their stability was ascribed to the unusually strong inter-nanocrystal bond produced by the interpenetration of thiol chains between neighboring nanocrystals within the nanocrystal superlattice.
