Langmuir monolayers of polyphenyl carboxylic acids

Article Abstract:

Research is presented demonstrating the synthesis of a series of 4'-substituted (methyl, phenyl, toluilyl, nitro, cyano and p-nitrophenyl) 5'-phenyl-m-terphenyl-4-carboxylic acids. Surface potential isotherms and pressure are used to characterize their Langmuir monolayers.

Comments on 'interfacial lateral electrical conductance on lipid monolayers: dose-dependent converse effect of alcohols', by Yoshida, T., Koga, Y.,

Article Abstract:

The affect of alcohol on the lateral conductance of two competing mechanisms proposed by Yoshida is discussed. The expected increase in enhanced conductance with the length of the alcohol chain increasing its partition in the membrane and being not supported by the data is described.

A study on two-dimensional phase transitions in Langmuir monolayers of carboxylic acid with a symmetrical triphenylbenzene ring system

Article Abstract:

An investigation of the phase transitions in Langmuir monolayers of 5'-phenyl-1,1':3'1"-terphenyl-4-carboxylic acid at the air/water interface showed that the surface pressure and surface potential isotherms display two liquid-condensed regions separated by a wide plateau with a 2-fold decrease in area/molecule. However, the characterization of monolayers that were transferred as multilayer LB films did not help in determining whether the origin of the plateau is the bilayer formation or the conformational changes of the triphenylbenzen ring system.
