Conformational analysis of (phenylenedimethylene)bis(n-octylammonium)dibromides in aqueous solution. Conformational change upon micellization
Article Abstract:
The synthesis of three gemini surfactants in which two quaternary ammonium species (CH3(CH2)7N+(CH3)2) are connected at the polar headgroups by o-, m-, or p-phenylenedimethylene spacers are presented. Carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is used in studying the conformational change in the surfactants after micellization. Results indicate that rigid spacers stabilize the distance between the two hydrophilic groups because the specific conformation of the spacer portion is preferentially stabilized upon miscellization.

Micelle formation of sodium 1-decanesulfonate and change of micellization temperature by excess counterion
Article Abstract:
The mass-action model has been used to analyze micellization and linked phenomena. It is clear that the micellization temperature is not the phase transition temperature of the hydrated surfactant solid.
