Coupling of normal and transverse motions during frictional sliding

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the coupling of normal and transverse motions during frictional sliding. Load- and frequency-dependent transitions between a number of "dynamic friction" states were observed using a surface forces apparatus, modified for measuring friction forces while simultaneously inducing normal vibrations between two boundary-lubricated sliding surfaces. Results indicate novel approaches for realizing ultralow friction in mechanical devices.

Tribology of shearing polymer surfaces. 2. Polymer (PnBMA) sliding on mica

Article Abstract:

Quantitative friction force measurements are made using a Surface Forces apparatus (SFA) modified for friction studies of a smooth poly(n-butyl methacrylate) (PnBMA) surface sliding on a stationery mica surface. The results of these studies are compared with those of the complementary system of mica sliding on a stationery polymer surface.

Tribiology of shearing polymer surfaces. 1. Mica sliding on polymer (PnBMA)

Article Abstract:

An investigation into the tribiology of shearing polymer junctions is carried out at molecular, microscopic and macroscopic levels, with focus on the friction resulting from a solid surface of mica sliding across a polymer surface of poly-n-butyl methacrylate.
