Design of mixed Langmuir films exposing segregated hydroxyl domains for inducing ice nucleation

Article Abstract:

The molecular structure of mixed Langmuir films of the normal alkane C32H66 with different quantities of the normal alcohol C31H63OH or the diol HO(CH2)30OH on pure water was investigated in situ using surface-sensitive methods and induced freezing of water drops. Experimental results revealed the formation of random solid solutions between the alkane and C31H63OH. Segregation of the two components occurred in the mixed systems of the alkane and HO(CH2)30OH. These results provide new ways of designing hydrophobic surfaces with hydrophilic sites.

Supersaturation and crystal nucleation in confined geometries

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine surface aggregation as a necessary condition for interfacially induced crystal nucleation using surface forces apparatus. The chloride salt of the rod-shaped dye bis(dimethylamino)hepatmethine in water was used as a model system. Results demonstrate an indirect correlation between the bulk concentration of the rod-shaped cation and the concentration at an isolated surface.

Enhanced nucleation, growth rate, and dopant incorporation in ZnO nanowires

Article Abstract:

A study to demonstrate the incorporation of metallic dopants in ZnO nanowires in the low-temperature process was conducted. This fast growth technique provided a route to fabrication of low-cost highly oriented ZnO nanowire on polished substrate for industrial applications.
