Moschcowitz, multimers, and metalloprotease
Article Abstract:
Research has shown that thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura may be caused by a deficiency of a protease that breaks up large complexes of von Willebrand factor. Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura is a bleeding disorder caused by abnormal blood clotting. Two 1998 studies show that patients with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura have low levels of von Willebrand factor-cleaving protease. In some cases, the enzyme was absent and in others, it was being inhibited by IgG antibodies. Patients with hemolytic-uremic syndrome have normal levels of the enzyme, giving doctors a way of distinguishing between these two similar diseases.
