Effect of ultrasound on ester hydrolysis in binary solvents

Article Abstract:

Studies done on the kinetics of the acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of ethyl, propyl, and butyl acetates in aqueous binary mixtures of ethanol and of 1,4-dioxane without sonication and under ultrasound at 22 kHz is presented. Results of the study reveal that sonochemical reaction of esterhydrolysis in ethanol-water and 1,4-dioxane-water mixtures can be interrelated with the destruction of the molecular structure of the binary solvent and essentially with the perturbation of hydrophobic solute-solvent interactions.

Theory and simulation of vibrational coupling in deuterated proteins: toward a new structural probe?

Article Abstract:

A theoretical and numerical analysis of the vibrational coupling of two deuterated structural elements in proteins is presented. When the amino acids couple, a vibrational level splitting extending the spectral distance between the corresponding lines of the singly deuterated amino acids is predicted. It is concluded that the selective deuteration of two amino acids may provide vital structural information in terms of the corresponding spatial contact between atoms located on the residues.

Porous volume of inorganic materials and degree of swelling of elastomers monitored by DSC measurements

Article Abstract:

Strong analogies between inorganic porous materials and polymeric swollen gels are demonstrated. The thermoporosimetry method is employed in determining the degree of swelling in elastomers. Thermoporosimetry is a reliable tool to study polymeric swollen gels and allows not only the measurement of the degree of swelling but also the mesh distribution in a one-step easy experiment.
