Enhanced diffraction efficiency in a photorefractive liquid crystal cell with poly(9-vinylcarbazole)-infiltrated mesoporous Ti[O.sub.2] layers

Article Abstract:

A layer-structured photorefractive liquid crystal (PR-LC) system with novel photoconductive layers composed of [C.sub.60]-doped poly(9-vinylcarbazole) (PVK)/Ti[O.sub.2] nanocomposite is reported. The enhanced diffraction efficiency is attributed to enhanced local density of photogenerated positive charges arising from the rapid drain of electrons to the mesoporous Ti[O.sub.2] layer.

Phase behavior of nanoparticles in a thermotropic liquid crystal

Article Abstract:

The outstanding behavior of a nanocomposite system composed of the thermotropic liquid crystal 5CB doped with nanoparticles of the magnetic iron oxide maghemite (gamma-Fe2O3) is described. The results reveals that the I-N transition is associated with a reversible gathering of nanoparticles inside droplets of the ferronematic phase coexisting with a nonmagnetic nematic host phase.

Biocompatible lipid-based liquid crystals and emulsions

Article Abstract:

Optical microscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods are used to investigate the phase behavior of the ternary system glycerol trioleate/sodium oleate/water (GTO/NaO/W). The results help in understanding the phase behavior of lipid and surfactants that are found as ingredients of pharmacological products.
