Free radical-mediated heterogeneous photocatalytic reduction of metal ions in UV-irradiated titanium dioxide suspensions
Article Abstract:
The indirect photocatalytic reduction of four metal ions, Cd(super 2+), Zn(super 2+), Mn(super 2+), TI(super +), using formate radical anions (CO(sub 2)(super .-)) generated in UV-irradiated aqueous titanium dioxide (TiO2) suspensions are described. The trends in the reactivity of these four metal ions are compared with corresponding rate constants that are reported for the homogeneous reactions of these metal ions with (CO(sub 2)(super .-)) in aqueous media.

Modeling of the electric field-induced birefringence of vesicles
Article Abstract:
The electric field-induced birefringence of lipid vesicles with an optically and electrically anisotropic membrane is modeled for a small extent of deformation of the originally spherical shape of the bilayer shell. The theory reveals the possible values of refractive indexes and dielectric constants of the membrane for which the birefringence should either be positive, zero or negative.

Reversing-pulse electric birefringence study of unilamellar DOPC vesicles
Article Abstract:
Unilamellar bilayer vesicles of 193 nm diameter, prepared from the zwitterionic phospholipid dioleoylphosphatidylcholine (DOPC) are investigated by the use of the reversing-pulse electric birefringence (RPEB) method with the aim of elucidating the mechanism of vesicle polarization that results in transient induced birefringence of the solution.
