GERMANY: PLASTICS PRODUCTION IN 1998
Article Abstract:
The industry association VKE expects the turnover growth of the German plastics industry in 1999 and 2000 to exceed that of sales volume, as producers will attempt to raise prices. However, experts predict the fall of plastics prices to continue in 1999. In 1998 Germany's production of plastics increased 5.7% to 12,529,000 tonnes. The industry's turnover, however, declined 2.4% to DM 31.72bn, with a 0.5% increase in domestic sales and a 4.7% fall in exports. Export volume fell 0.8% to 7,410,000 tonnes, while imports grew 15.3% to 6,340,000 tonnes. Export surplus declined 45.7% in volume and 16.8% in value to DM 6.8bn from 1997. The German industry comprises about 60 companies with 60,656 staff (down 6.1%).
