Growth of Pt-Rh alloy crystallites on alpha-AlsO3 studied by atomic force microscopy and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy
Article Abstract:
The development of bimetallic Pt-Rh crystallites on a single crystal alpha-Al2O3 was studied by atomic force microscopy as a function of Rh concentrations. The oxidative environment encouraged the growth of Pt crystallites but not in the growth of pure Rh crystallites. When Rh was combined to Pt, the crystallites, however, remained small and were spread out on the substrates after annealing at 800 degrees C. The surface concentration of Pt and Rh by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy and the role of the wettability of Rh oxide in the growth of crystallites were also analyzed.

Atomic surface structure of UHV-prepared template-stripped platinum and single-crystal platinum (111)
Article Abstract:
A novel method is presented for preparing ultraflat noble metal surfaces in situ under ultrahigh vacuum from thin metal films that are deposited through physical vapor deposition on commercially available silicon substrates. The resulting scanning-tunneling microscopy data suggest that under the surface preparation conditions examined, template-stripped platinum surfaces are predominantly [111] textured with a surface roughness equivalent to or better than a single-crystal Pt(111) surface.
