In situ STM study of potential-dependent height change of a tetrathiafulvalene derivative embedded in alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers on Au(111)
Article Abstract:
Electroactive tetrathiafulvalene thiol islands embedded in an n-alkanethiol self assembled monolayer (SAM) matrix are studied under potential control using in situ scanning tunneling microscopy. Results indicate that not only the oxidation state but also the orientation of the electroactive moiety responds to the electrochemical potential and that orientational change is also a key factor in designing molecular devices under potential control.

Photooxidation of self-assembled monolayers by exposure to light of wavelength 254 nm: A static SIMS study
Article Abstract:
Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiols are photooxidized by exposure to light from a lamp emitting light with a wavelength of 254 nm. SAM oxidation on exposure to UV light occurs in the absence of ozone.
