Oxidic or metallic palladium: Which is the active phase in Pd-catalyzed aerobic alcohol oxidation?

Article Abstract:

A palladium catalyst is compared in its oxidized and reduced state by investigating the catalytic activity and the catalyst structure during the aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol before and after reduction of the catalyst in hydrogen. The results show that the palladium oxide exhibits hardly any catalytic activity for alcohol oxidation at 50 degrees Celsius whereas metallic Pd particles are much more active.

On the coverage-dependent adsorption geometry of benzene adsorbed on Pd{111}: a study by fast XPS and NEXAFS

Article Abstract:

Fast XPS data obtained during benzene uptake on Pd{111} are consistent with those obtained during benzene desorption, and both are in accord with the corresponding NEXAFS results. At low coverages benzenes initially adopts a flat-lying geometry on Pd{111}, bonding via the aromatic pi-electron system, which desorbs in the range 250-600 K.
