Phase behavior of a "clouding" nonionic polymer in water. Effects of hydrophobic modification and added surfactant on phase compositions

Article Abstract:

The phase behaviors of the ether ethyl(hydroxyethyl)-cellulose (EHEC), a lower consolution temperature (LCST) polymer, and its hydrophobically modified analogue (HMEHEC), were examined by determining the cloud point curve. The cloud point and coexistence curves for the quasi-binary water systems and the quasi-ternary systems were determined by pouring minute amounts of the anionic surfactant, sodium octylbenzenesulfonate. It was observed that HMEHEC had a lower cloud point than the EHEC. The cloud point curves of the water systems exhibited weaker concentration reliance.

Fragmentation of the lamellae and fractionation of polymer coils upon mixing poly(dimethylacrylamide) with the lamellar phase of aerosol OT in water

Article Abstract:

The mixing of poly(dimethylacrylamide) with the lamellar phase of sodium sulfosuccinate/deuterated water produces partial segregation and the degree of segregation increases with the molecular weight of the polymer. The molecular weight polymer, which gets preferentially excluded from the lamellae, the quadrupolar signal of anisotropic water disappears as the lamellar phase is in the form of microcrystallites.

Mixing oil and water by a DNA-based surfactant

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to investigate the self-assembly behavior of a cationic surfactant with DNA as counterion in mixtures of water and decanol. The phase diagram is established and the different regions of the phase diagram characterized with respect to microstructure by (super 2)H NMR, small-angle X-ray scattering and other techniques.
