Phase equilibria in carbon dioxide expanded solvents: Experiments and molecular simulations

Article Abstract:

The complementary molecular simulations and experimental results of phase equilibria for carbon dioxide expanded acetonitrile, methanol, ethanol, acetone, acetic acid, toluene and 1-octene are presented, where high-pressure Jerguson view cell is used to measure the volume expansions. In all the carbon dioxide expanded liquids (CXL's) studied, the molecular simulation results for the volume expansion of these binary mixtures are as good as the predictions based on the Peng-Robinson equation of state, showing the utility of molecular simulation in the prediction of CXL phase equilibria.

Solvation and solvatochromism in C[O.sub.2]-expanded liquids.2. Experiment-simulation comparisons of preferential solvation in three prototypical mixtures

Article Abstract:

The electronic absorption and emission spectra of 10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene (PEA) and coumarin 153 (C153) are measured in C[O.sub.2]-expanded cyclohexane (c-[C.sub.6][H.sub.12]),acetonitrile(C[H.sub.3]CN) and methanol(C[H.sub.3]OH). It is inferred that simple understanding of spectral shift is insufficient to give accurate and dependable determinations of local compositions in C[O.sub.2]-expanded liquid mixtures as they exaggerate the range of preferential solvation in the mixtures.

Synthesis and steric stabilization of silver nanoparticles in neat carbon dioxide solvent using fluorine-free compounds

Article Abstract:

A one-step process is described for synthesis and stabilization of silver nanoparticles in neat carbon dioxide solvents by using only fluorine-free compounds. Cyclohexane is examined as a nonfluorinated cosolvent to further enhance the solvent strength of the C[O.sub.2] mixtures and hence the dispersibility of the isostearic acid capped nanoparticles.
