Photomodulation of transport rates in liquid membranes containing photoactive carriers

Article Abstract:

The photoinduced modulation in the transport rates of solutes has been investigated. The thermodynamic and kinetic properties of photoactive carriers were determined by a steady-state model. The results showed that the value of K(super d)(sub s) should be greater than the optimal range for thermal facilitated transport and the value of K(super d)(sub w) should be less than the optimal range to obtain high degrees of photomediation and high facilitation factors. A larger difference between the two values results in higher facilitation factors and greater degree of photomodulation.

Photopumping in liquid membranes containing photoactive carriers

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze photoactive carriers supporting a range of thermodynamic and kinetic characteristics to determine active transport against a concentration gradient. A steady-state framework characterizing photofacilitated transport in liquid membranes was utilized in the analysis. Experimental results indicated the possibility of maintaining reasonable solute fluxes against concentration gradients higher than 5 using photofacilitated liquid membranes.

Simulations of photomodulated solute transport in doubly illuminated liquid membranes containing photoactive carriers

Article Abstract:

A steady-state model describing photofacilitated transport in liquid membranes under double illumination, which also explores the effects of a wide range of thermodynamic and kinetic carrier properties on the control of photoinduced transport rates of solutes, is presented. The greatest enhancement in solute transport under double illumination is observed for carriers with very slow interconversion rate constants between the strongly and weakly binding forms.
