Postirradiation electron transfer vs differential radical decay in X-irradiated DNA and its mixtures with additives. Electron spin resonance spectroscopy in LiBr glass at low temperatures

Article Abstract:

Free radical formation in DNA and in colyophilized mixtures of DNA with the additives mitoxantrone and riboflavin is monitored after X-ray irradiation in frozen aqueous glasses (7 M LiBr/[D.sub.2]O) at 77 K by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. A model is proposed to describe the postirradiation radical fading mechanisms, which involve liberation of radiation-induced matrix-trapped defects with time and it is assumed that these defects are ESR-mute and react with radicals by net radical destruction.

Charge-transfer excited state dynamics in DNA hairpins substituted with an ethylenylpyrenyl-dU electron source and halo-dU traps

Article Abstract:

Nine hairpins (HPs) are studied at room temperature to observe their pyrene (super .+)/dU(super .-) charge transfer (CT) excited state dynamics following photoexcitation at 355 nm with a 25 ps laser pulse. The increased CT emission quantum yield in HPs with traps compared to HPs without traps implies that externally injected electrons can migrate to uracil in U(super PE) and thus indirectly form the emulsive pyrene (super .+)/dU(super .-) CT state of U(super PE).

A dynamic model for electron transport in DNA

Article Abstract:

A new model for the simulation of electron transport through duplex DNA is developed and applied to DNA segments of varying lengths consisting of a thymine and complementary adenine strand. The calculated electron transport lifetimes follow the distance dependence of incoherent multistep hopping theory.
