Soft-UV photolithography using self-assembled monolayers
Article Abstract:
Thiol-on-gold self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) that can be photodetected by using soft ultraviolet (UV) irradiation to yield C[O.sub.2]H functionalized surfaces are reported. The results from infrared studies have shown that the long chain protected residues reorganize and shield the functional COOH groups, thereby reducing the hydrophilic character of the surface.

Microscopic folds and macroscopic jerks in compressed lipid monolayers
Article Abstract:
Hitherto unrecognized cooperative behavior in the stochastic collapse of certain compressed lipid monolayers implicated in pulmonary function is reported. The collapse events involve folding of the monolayer on a micron scale, yet each event produces a macroscopic jerk of the layer.
