Spatially anisotropic etching of graphite by hyperthermal atomic oxygen

Article Abstract:

The spatially anisotropic kinetics involved in the chemical reaction between highly ordered pyrolytic graphite, and a beam containing hyperthermal atomic oxygen and molecular oxygen yields unique surface morphologies. Numerous multilayer circular pits embedded in the reacted areas were observed on exposure at moderate sample temperatures with the use of atomic force microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy.

Spatial and temporal dynamics of individual step merging events on Ni(977) measured by scanning tunneling microscopy

Article Abstract:

The step dynamics induced by the chemisorption of oxygen on Ni(977) at low coverages and elevated temperatures is studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The results suggested that there is optimal oxygen coverage, corresponding to complete titration of the single step density that enables fast step merging to occur.
