Unusual adsorption properties of silver adlayers on the Pt(111) electrode surface
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the adsorption properties of silver adlayers on the Pt(111) electrode surface using linear sweep voltammetry, infrared spectroelectrochemistry and in situ surface X-ray scattering. Results reveal a pseudomorphic Ag monolayer and an incommensurate expanded bilayer on Pt(111) formed at underpotentials and the unusual adsorption properties of the silver layers. The adsorption behavior of the Ag adlayers are attributed to the charge-transfer process and the electron distribution in the Ag/Pt(111) surface.

Probing the 3d spin momentum with X-ray emission spectroscopy: The case of molecular-spin transitions
Article Abstract:
X-ray emission spectra of [Fe.sup.III], [Fe.sup.II] and [Co.sup.II] spin-crossover compounds in their high-spin and low-spin forms are described. It is shown that all X-ray emission features are sensitive to the spin state and they reveal the details of the redistribution of electrons on the three-dimensional levels associated with the spin-state change revealing features at the X-ray absorption preedge.

Adsorbate-geometry specific subsurface relaxation in the CO/Pt(111) system
Article Abstract:
The study revealed a new type of substrate relaxation by the surface X-ray scattering study of CO adsorption of Pt(111), in which different layer expansions and in-plane rotations occur for the Pt atoms under the near-top-site and the near-bridge-site CO molecules. It concluded that subsurface atoms could move collectively forming a pattern on a nanometer scale determined by the unit cell of an adlayer.
