X-ray study of alkanediols on graphite
Article Abstract:
Monolayers of alkanediols adsorbed from vapor on graphite were measured using X-ray diffraction. Findings reveal that the monolayers of the diols undergo two states of a metastable and a stable phase based on their annealing temperatures. The stable monolayers take different molecular arrangements based on either an even number of carbon atoms or an odd number of carbon atoms. The two kinds of packing found in the stable monolayers are closely connected to the different conformations of the hydroxyl headgroups and the phase transition of the metastable to stable monolayers follow the conformational change of the headgroups for odd diols.

Nontrivial differentiation between two identical functionalities within the same molecule studied by STM
Article Abstract:
Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is used in studying the solution-substrate interface of physisorbed monolayer films of small alkyl-substituted bisurea derivatives based on the structure R1-NHCONH-R2-NHCONH-R1 with R1 = C12H25 and R2 = C9H18 or C12H24. STM has proven to be an effective tool in studying physisorbed adlayers of organic molecules on atomically conductive surfaces. Results indicate the conformation of the molecules depends on the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl spacer which results in an odd-even effect.

Orientational isomers and monolayer structure of CH3D physisorbed on NaCl(100)
Article Abstract:
The polarized infrared spectra of CH3D adsorbed on NaCl(100) in the temperature range 5 to 37 K have been studied. The experiments were carried out on the (100) faces of a pair of cleaved sodium chloride single crystals. Hammer and chisel were used in cleaving single crystal blocks of NaCl in dry nitrogen atmosphere to obtain fresh surfaces. Results indicated that the molecules are arranged as tripods against the NaCl(100) surface. All the tripods are oriented with the D atom against the surface for temperatures below 10 K.
