Characterization of organosulfur molecular monolayers on Au(111) using scanning tunneling microscopy
Article Abstract:
Treatment of amphiphile monolayers to metal surfaces controls the wetting behavior of metals. A study was conducted on the self-assembled monolayer systems composed of hydrocarbons derived from thiol on Au(111) substrates also known as AuC(sub)nX. With the use scanning tunneling microscope (STM), structural characterization of AuC(sub)nX was conducted. The results were unusual for they resolve molecular-scale crystalline and noncrystalline in a regular pattern and defect structures in real space.

Scanning tunneling microscopy imaging of small adsorbed molecules on metal surfaces in an ultrahigh vacuum environment
Article Abstract:
Scanning tunneling microscope has made imaging of solid surfaces with atomic resolution possible. Individual small molecules on metal surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) are imaged in a variety of conditions, such as low and room temperature, physisorbed and chemisorbed, low and saturated coverage, and coadsorbed with other atoms and molecules. STM can also show molecular binding sites, orientations, diffusion rates, and attached coefficients.
