Comparison of phosphorus and silicon: hypervalency, stereochemistry, and reactivity
Article Abstract:
The comparison of tetracoordinated phosphorus and silicon via hexacoordinated states and the possible hepta coordination at silicon and phosphorus are discussed. These comparisons are made using ab initio calculations on selected ground-state structures and their corresponding energies. In addition, pentacoordinated silicon compounds are more reactive than the corresponding phosphorus compounds due to the lower nuclear charge on the silicon. Low nuclear charge enables the easy cleavage of bonds in silicon during nucleophilic displacement reactions.

Monocyclic and polycyclic phosphanes
Article Abstract:
The developments in the field of monocyclophosphanes and polycyclophosphanes is presented, including unpublished studies. The use of accepted synthetic routes and modern NMR methods for structure characterization has generated new compounds. The observed low barriers to inversion at phosphorous in some cage-like organopolycyclophosphanes has found wide applications. Investigations regarding the chemical properties of phosphanes are geared toward ring transformation and ring degradation reactions.

Neutral six-coordinate phosphorus
Article Abstract:
A review of research work on the preparation, chemical reactivity as well as structural and electronic characterization of neutral compounds with a six-coordinate phosphorus center is presented. The review, which excludes solid phosphides and other ionic species, covers Lewis acid-base adducts and chelating ligands. It highlights the possible routes to neutral six-coordinate phosphorus compounds via associative and dissociative mechanisms.
