Interlocked and intertwined structures and superstructures
Article Abstract:
The recent advances in the synthetic methodology allows the creation of molecules and supramolecules, and characterization of intertwined and interlocked structures and superstructures. Scanning force microscopy is used to study the properties of the structures and superstructures. The synthesis, molecular recognition, hydrogen bonding and other aspects of interlocked compounds such as rotaxane and catenanes are discussed. The formation of rotaxane and catenanes is based on the molecular recognition between pi-electron acceptors and pi-electron donors.

Interlocked macromolecules
Article Abstract:
The structures and syntheses of macromolecules such as polyrotaxanes and polycatenanes have been studied. A supramolecular complex results from the insertion of an acyclic molecule into the cavity of a macrocyclic molecule. Chemists have used a variety of recognition motifs in threading chemical beads onto chemical strings, resulting in the syntheses of macromolecules. Main-chain and side-chain pseudopolyrotaxanes and polyrotaxanes can now be prepared from commercially available raw materials in a few steps.

Synthetic cyclic oligosaccharides
Article Abstract:
The various methods which have been developed for the synthesis of cyclic oligosaccharides are reviewed. Two primary strategies for the synthesis of cyclic oligosaccharides are the cycloglycosylation of a long-chain linear oligosaccharide derivative with both donor and acceptor functions, and the polycondensation-cyclization or cyclooligomerization of an appropriately functionalized saccharide derivative, corresponding to the smallest repeating unit of a specific target cyclic oligosaccharide.
