Signaling recognition events with fluorescent sensors and switches
Article Abstract:
The construction of fluorescent signaling systems for various purposes was analyzed. Molecular fluorescence or luminescence for sensing and switching was found advantageous namely for its high sensitivity detection down to the single molecule, 'on-off' switchability, feasible human-molecule communication, subnanomer spatial resolution with submicron visualization, and submillisecond temporal resolution.

Electron spectroscopy using metastable atoms as probes for solid surfaces
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the properties of metastable atom electron spectroscopy and its use for studying adsorbed and clean surfaces. The approach is capable of selectively analyzing outermost surface layers as well as monitor individual orbital distribution. Further studies should focus on quantitative data on the spectra of metastable atom electrons and electron spin.

Calixarene-derived fluorescent probes
Article Abstract:
The developmental progress in sensor chemistry of calix-[4]-arene-based ion sensor with emphasis on analysis of the photophysical mechanisms is reviewed. The use of calixarenes as fluorescent reagents for sensing anions and cations is demonstrated.
