Inhibition of glycosphingolipid biosynthesis: application to lysosomal storage disorders
Article Abstract:
The authors review the publications on glycosphingolipids, the components of the cellular membranes of the eukaryotic cells. The topics of interest include the involvement of the enzymes in the glycosphingolipid biosynthesis control and the catabolic deficiency leading to the glycosphingolipidoses.

Recent advances in the chemoenzymatic synthesis of carbohydrates and carbohydrate mimetics
Article Abstract:
Enzymes offer solutions to the problems in organic synthesis by allowing the construction of organic compounds through a one-pot, multistep reaction sequence. Enzymatic reactions require minimum conditions to proceed and result in products that exhibit high regio- and stereoselectivity. This review focuses on recent progress in the chemoenzymatic synthesis of complex molecules such as carbohydrates and carbohydrate mimetics using aldolases and glycosyltransferases. Examples illustrating aldol addition with aldolases and enzymatic glycosidation are provided.
