The electrophilic substitution reaction of the dithionitronium cation (SNS)+ with benzene
Article Abstract:
The eletrophilic substitution reaction of benzene with the dithionitronium cation has been investigated. The compound (SNS)+((SNS)(AsF6)) reacts with benzene in liquid sulfur dioxide to give an orange solution, then a blue one and finally a purple one. It is probable that the orange color comes from a molecule-ion charge-transfer complex; this idea is supported by linear dependence of the ionization potential of the arenes and the energy of the charge-transfer absorption of the newly prepared arene-(SNS)(AsF6) mixtures in liquid SO2 solution. The other colors can be explained and attributed to other mechanisms supported by other data. The UV-visible spectrum of (SNS)+((SNS)(AsF6)) in liquid SO2 has been reported.

Extended lithium ion pair indicator scale in tetrahydrofuran
Article Abstract:
The lithium ion pair, pK, scale in tetrahydrofuran (THF) has been extended so that it has 25 indicators with a range for pK of 9.7-24.4. Values on the newly improved scale have been compared with cesium ion pair acidities and to ionic pK's in aqueous DMSO and DMSO. The scale likely will be useful in ion pair acidity measurements of lithium salts in THF, especially in the area of convenient proton transfer rates lower than pK 25.
