The self-assembly of a layered material: metal-alkanethiolate bilayers
Article Abstract:
Self-assembly of metal-alkanethiolate bilayers has been studied using IR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction with the idea of making some generalizations about layer materials. Layered materials were synthesized and characterized. Self-assembly takes place at the interface of the metal-ion-containing aqueous phase and an alkanethiol-containing organic phase. The bilayers are highly ordered and have tilted, alkyl chains that are entirely trans. A new model based on a hexagonal arrangement of metal atoms in the central plane has been developed. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) give a way to set up well-defined surface structures, the properties of which can be changed through substitutions to the initial alkanethiol molecules. Alkanethiols react and adsorb in nice, neat monolayers onto clean metals used for coins, like silver and copper.

Remarkable kinetic stability of alpha-thiocarbamoyl substituted 4-methoxybenzyl cations
Article Abstract:
The kinetic stability of alpha-thiocarbamoyl substituted 4-methoxybenzyl cations is remarkable. Lifetimes and spectra seem to indicate a strong interaction of the benzylic center with the thioamide group. The ions were studied with flash photolysis in acetonitrile/water solution and in methanol/ water solution. The absorption spectra of the cations with UV-visible light show significant differences from those of typical 4-methoxybenzyl cations.
