A Mac by any other name...
Article Abstract:
The PowerPC platform (PPCP) architecture developed by Apple, IBM and Motorola will allow for the production of Mac clones. Motorola's PPCP is scheduled to ship late in 1996, while IBM and Apple versions are scheduled for 1997 delivery. PPCP machines can run several operating systems with the appropriate hardware support. They will be the first authentic Mac clones and will be capable of running a version of the Mac OS completely separate from the ROM and other proprietary artifacts. The licensing of the Mac OS to Motorola and IBM for sublicensing to other vendors and component makers is expected to help the clone market take off with a potential rise in Mac market share. UNIX, NetWare, and Mac users will likely utilize the PPCP architecture more than producers of multimedia programs who cite poor performance compared with existing versions.

Patently obvious
Article Abstract:
Law and order is gradually being introduced on the cyber frontier, as governments implement regulations governing such things as privacy, taxation, pornography, security and copyrights. Generally a hands off approach has been adopted and as a result e-commerce is blooming and copyrights are being protected online. However in the area of patents, Web regulation has gone to far. Some Web-related patents that have recently been awarded actually have the capability of stifling future Internet innovations. These include Internet online rewards programs, pay-per-view ads, online payment schemes and a reverse auction business model. Fortunately, these patent holders claim to have no plans to strangle growth on the Web.
