Battle of the LANs
Article Abstract:
Local Area Networks (LANs) are becoming very prominent in the business environment, allowing users access both to local resources and distant databases. Architectures include star configurations, bus architectures, ring networks, and tree architectures. LAN categories such as proprietary networks, both product-specific and independent, and open networks each have distinct advantages. Twisted pair wiring has emerged to provide advantages over broadband and baseband cable networks. Its ability to carry voice as well as data has led to the concept of a combined workstation- telephone, and a battle for control of the market. Users should evaluate LAN costs, compatibility, and their own applications. Photographs of LANs, a vendor chart and a LAN characteristics chart are included.

Careful consideration of product advertising is required in the selection of new automated equipment. Claims by enthusiastic sales persons of what a system can do require screening prior to decision making. Hands-on use of equipment during a demonstration is strongly recommended.
